Flu, H1N1 and Cold Symptoms Chart

I suspect that you may think that the above topic is not apropos for a Leadership blog…but I believe it fits perfectly. The biggest part of being a leader is leading yourself first. And a huge part of that is taking responsibility for all aspects of yourself, especially your health and your body.

We each have been created with special gifts to bring to the world. But by neglecting our selves, we are not only holding ourselves back, but also delaying the help and gain we could be providing for someone else. It’s essential to lead ourselves first by taking care of the precious creations that we are.
To your abundant health!

Where Are Your Habits Leading You?

I take regular classes from Jack Canfield. I also get his newsletter, part of which I’m passing along today. This article addresses the exact things I help clients with (along with business issues, because we bring all of who we are into all that we do!) Enjoy!

“Where are Your Habits Leading You?”
by Jack Canfield

Where are your habits leading you?You are an accumulation of your habits. From how you get out of bed, how you shower, how you dress, how you walk, sit, and talk, how you respond to the world, how you act in front of others, and how you think; you’re living out your habits.

Habits are necessary. They free up your mind so you can concentrate on how to survive day to day. You don’t have to think about how to drive your car so you can be on the lookout for danger while you are driving. You don’t have to think about how to walk so you can concentrate on where you’re going.

Unfortunately, habits can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which will limit your success. To become successful, you will need to drop bad habits and develop new ones that are in line with the life you want to live.

People don’t suddenly appear in the life they want to live… their habits determine their outcome!

What are the habits you have that are keeping you from achieving your goals?

Really be honest with yourself here… Are you always running late? Do you return phone calls within 24 hours? Do you get enough sleep? Do you follow through on your promises? Do you plan out your day?

Imagine what your life would be like if all your habits were their productive counterparts!

What would your life be like if you ate healthy meals, exercised and got enough sleep?

What if you saved your money, stopped using credit cards and paid cash for everything?

What if you stopped procrastinating, overcame your fears, and began networking with people in your field?

Would your life be different? I bet it would!

So, my suggested action step for you is to write down some productive habits you could adopt and visualize in your life, step two is to ‘act as if’ you were living these new habits right now!

I’d like to help you get moving toward creating more successful habits, so I’d recommend you develop four of your new success habits each year, one for each quarter.

Once you pick the new habit you’re ready to adopt, next you’ll want to create a method that will support your new habit.

Here are some ideas… You could write it down on a card that you keep with you and read several times a day. You could make it a part of your daily visualization. You could also enlist the help of an accountability partner who has habits to change, or work with a personal coach who can keep you on track.

It’s important to make a 100% commitment to your new habit, so be specific about the steps that you’re willing to take in order to drop an old habit and adopt a new one. Don’t be vague about how you will change your habits. Spell it out for yourself so you can recognize situations that motivate you to act out your new habit.

Just developing four new habits a year will dramatically shift your life to be more in line with your vision. And the more in line it becomes, the easier the other habits are to replace because your perspective is shifting and you can see more clearly how your old habits aren’t serving you anymore.

Make the decision. Make the commitment. Then watch your new, positive life unfold!

It’s there all the time!

Here’s something I received today from Mike Dooley, teacher in The Secret, author, and CEO of TUT, who says “Thoughts become things, so choose the good ones!”:

“Life, is not what you see, but what you’ve projected.
It’s not what you’ve felt, but what you’ve decided.
It’s not what you’ve experienced, but how you’ve remembered it.
It’s not what you’ve forged, but what you’ve allowed.
And it’s not who’s appeared, but who you’ve summoned.

And this should serve you well… until you find what you already have.”

So, dear reader and fellow traveler, to you I say—
You have it all within to lead yourself to who you want to be, with what results, with whom…and excuses be damned.

Leading Through Teamwork!

Here are some reflections about the meaning and power of a team:

Teamwork

“I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.” ~ Mia Hamm

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Meade

“Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” ~ Andrew Carnegie

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” ~ Henry Ford

The “No-Recession” Seeds of Success!

I’m passing along something I recently received from Mark Victor Hansen:

“I recently saw a great bumper sticker that said ‘I heard there was a recession coming; I’ve decided not to participate‘. It’s true, we may currently have an economic challenge going on in our culture, however, you can choose not to participate. You can acquire the tools and skills that you need to ride out this economic storm and learn how to become even more successful.
A great mentor of mine, Napoleon Hill, once said ‘In every negative event is the seed of an equal or greater benefit.’ Here we have this negative event but there is still a seed of possibility for you to create something totally new in your life. We are in a time of economic winter. What does a farmer do in winter? He fixes the tools, sharpens the saw, fixes the tractor, and thinks about what he’s going to plant when spring comes. What are the seed thoughts and behaviors you are planting in your life?
If you’re ready to plant the seeds to improve yourself and would like some help along the way, I’d like to encourage you to hire a personal coach.” ~ Mark Victor Hansen

The 2% of Leaders: Wishing vs. Believing, by Napolean Hill

The majority of people never discover the difference between wishing and
believing; nor do they recognize that there are six steps which people
usually follow in using their mind-power for the attainment of their desires.
These steps are:

First: The vast majority of people go through life by merely wishing for
things. The percentage of people who stop at wishing is estimated at 70%.

Second: A much smaller percentage of the people develop their wishes into
desires. These are estimated at 10%.

Third: A still smaller percentage of the people develop their wishes and
desires into hopes. These are estimated at 8%.

Fourth: A still smaller percentage of the people step their mind-power up
to where it becomes belief. These are estimated at 6%.

Fifth: And yet a very much smaller percentage of the people crystallize
wishes, desires and hopes into belief, and then into burning desire, and
finally faith. This percentage is estimated at 4%.

Sixth: And last, a very small percentage of the people take the last two
steps, putting their faith into action by (1) planning and (2) acting to carry
out their plans. This percentage is estimated at only 2%!

The outstanding leaders in every walk of life are the ones in the sixth
group. They recognize the power of their own minds, take possession of that
power and direct it to whatever ends they choose. To these people the word
“impossible” has no meaning. To them, everything they want or need is possible–
they manage to get it. The only trait which differentiates them from most of
the others who accept failure as their lot, is that they recognize and use
their mind-power for the attainment of the circumstances and things they
want while the others do not.

Wishes, desires, hopes, beliefs, faith, and action…where are you?

Go Where You’re Celebrated!

I gave myself a great gift this month–a 9-day trip to the Midwest. Not very exciting or gift-y you say?
It was to me. The last 18 months have been challenging, to say the least. I had already made reservations to fly to Kansas City to spend 4 days with my almost-92-year-old dad, then drive to Des Moines (where I was born & raised*) to see family and friends. As Thanksgiving approached I felt myself kind of “flapping in the breeze”, and was very grateful that I had made plans to plug into places, things, and people that are so much a part of who I am.
The warmth, love, familiarity, bonding, and simplicity of moments shared were the greatest holiday celebrations I’ve had in a long time, providing the energy & “fuel” for the year ahead.
All this reinforces what I preach: “Go where you’re celebrated, not where you’re tolerated”. Surround yourself with people who know you (with all your failures, warts, and all), and love you anyway. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST STEPS IN LEADING YOURSELF!
On my trip I finished the wonderful book, “Success That Lasts” by Porras, Emery and Thompson (Stewart Emery was one of my radio guests), and in the book the authors demonstrate that the most “successful” people surround themselves with people who celebrate them and their passions for what they are doing.
We should demand no less of ourselves.

*BTW:…that’s a 1921 artist’s rendering of my old High School (above)–still there after 86 years. I toured it and was charmed by what a beautiful place it is…funny how time changes your perspective on things!

I Hear a Symphony!

So many times I’ve heard (often in my own mind!) the analogy of a fantastic leader as a symphony conductor. I thought of this last week while I was at the ballet, where there were two groups of performers: the orchestra and the dancers. It seemed to me that the job of anyone leading or directing a group endeavor would create the greatest synergistic achievement by coaching and inspiring the greatest performance from each participant.
Then I read a passage in the book Success Built to Last, by Stewart Emery & Jerry Porras, that tells a story about this very thing. Porras, Emery, and their co-author Mark Thompson interviewed Benjamin Zander, conductor of the Bostom Philharmonic. Zander saw a study done at Harvard that showed that orchestra player came in just below prison guard in job satisfaction. Turns out, most orchestra conductors are “the worst examples of dictatorship”…sounds like a lousy leadership example to me.
Zander had an epiphany…”the conductor is the only musician who doesn’t make a sound…the meaning of ‘symphonia’ is ‘voices sounding together’. So the job of the conductor is to make sure that every voice is heard. Not only heard but beautifully expressed. Music is about getting people to be fully expressed–passionately engaged, giving their all–and still enabling everybody else to be heard, too.”
Now THAT sounds like a nice definition of effective leadership.

More about me

I thought that some of you might want to know more about my life.
First, I love to have fun. I can find humor in just about anything. I love to laugh (and have a pretty hearty laugh to prove it!) Favorite activities are things that stimulate my mind, my heart, or my spirit….and if it’s an experience that can achieve all that at once, then it’s Nirvana! I love to be active. Living in a downtown San Jose neighborhood is perfect for me, for there are lots of restaurants, concerts, plays, musicals, movies, museums, and other activities that I can enjoy…and I can walk to most of them! Now that the holidays are coming, Christmas in the Park is setting up in downtown, and the ice skating rink around the palm trees outside the museum of art is open, so there’s a change in the downtown landscape that’s wonderful and stimulating. I plan to go ice skating downtown this year (and cross-country skiing later in the season…pray for snow!)
I share my home with one of the “best buds” ever, my miniature poodle, Patou. He’s a terrific, fun, well-mannered and intelligent guy. Everyone in my neighborhood knows him by name, but can’t quite remember who I am. However, we’re a team. There’s picture of Patou in his new “ski vest” on a boating/camping trip last summer. Being a poodle, he’s a water maniac. Can’t keep him out of it. Luckily, one of my neighbors has a pool that is open to Patou at all times.
I love dogs and parakeets. I’ve had one or the other most of my life. Both are social animals… like me, I guess.
