As we put our hands together in gratitude, we open them up to receive more…a strange and true fact of life. In fact, research shows that gratitude is probably THE SINGLE most beneficial habit that we can cultivate!
Cicero, the Roman philosopher, said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues, but the parent of all others.” And according to Anthony Robbins,”When you are grateful, fear disappears and ABUNDANCE appears.” So why not find something to be grateful for every single minute of the day?? Imagine what abundance you’ll experience!
Need convincing?? Let’s look at the potent, pervasive power of gratitude….
To start (and end) with, gratitude creates more happiness. It improves our health, relationships, emotions, personality, career, and productivity! Yup…and so much more. Below are researched results of having a “Gratitude Attitude”. (from more than 40 research studies. See: HappierHuman.com)
1. Gratitude makes us happier.
A five-minute-a-day gratitude journal can increase your long-term well-being by more than 10 percent. Roughly the same impact as doubling your income…wow! It’s so much easier to express gratitude than it is to double your income, AND gratitude can also help your income increase. It’s a double win!
2. Gratitude makes more people like us.
Gratitude increases “social capital”, by making us nicer, more trusting, more social, and more appreciative. This translates into having more friends, deeper relationships, and improved marriages. In fact, two studies (with 250 participants) showed that participants who were 10% more grateful than average had 17.5% more social breadth and depth, than others who did not have a “gratitude attitude”.
3. Gratitude makes us more optimistic.
There’s a strong correlation between gratitude and optimism. Optimism then makes us happier, improving our health, which has been shown to increase lifespan by as much as a few years! Wouldn’t that make taking 5 minutes a day to write down your “gratitudes du jour” well worth the time?
4. Gratitude makes us healthier.
In several studies, people keeping gatitude journals demonstrated the following shifts in their health: fewer physical symptoms, less pain., longer and better sleep, more time spent exercising, less physical pain, better relaxation, less depression, lower blood pressure.
5. Gratitude strengthens our emotions.
Gratitude reduces feelings of envy, makes our memories happier, lets us experience good feelings, and helps us bounce back from stress.
6.Gratitude reduces materialism.
Gratitude causes us to focus less on things that don’t matter, like making money, and more on the things that do, like family, friends and using our gifts. Now, there’s nothing wrong with wanting more, but materialism is strongly correlated with reduced well-being and increased rates of mental disorder. Materialism makes people feel less competent, reduces their ability to appreciate and enjoy the good in life, makes them more self-centered. Materialism also generates negative emotions, AND reduces feelings of relatedness and gratitude. I’d say go with gratitude first.
7. Gratitude boosts our career.
Gratitude makes us more effective managers, helps us network, increases decision making capabilities, increases productivity, and helps you get mentors and proteges. As a result, gratitude helps us achieve career goals, as well as making the workplace a more friendly and enjoyable place to be.
6. Gratitude develops our personality.
By making us more optimistic, more relaxed, more loving, more spiritual, with better self esteem, and less self-centeredness.
7. Gratitude improves us socially.
It makes us more friendly, more respectful, have better marriages, more friends, and deeper relationships.
So, as a leadership, business and personal coach, my assignment for you is to start building your gratitude attitude today, and find 5 things to be grateful for. Do this every day, and watch your life change in many ways. Please write to me and let me know your results: email@example.com
To Your Abundance!
There are four things everyone wants. To be: happier, wealthier, healthier, and to have better relationships. Guess which of these is the one that will almost ensure you will achieve the other 3….that’s right! It’s happiness!
Many of us think “when I’m healthier, or wealthier, or have better relationships, then I will be happy”. But, guess what? That’s backward!
Research shows that happy people are more productive (and therefore, more likely to earn more), are healthier, and have better relationships. You can choose happiness right now, regardless of circumstances. And you must choose it, if you want things to change in your life.
If happiness is a choice, what can you do to start planting, fertilizing, watering and cultivating it to take root deep in you and continue to flourish and bear fruit for many years? Here are 10 “Happiness Habits” borrowed from Mind Movies. Adopt one per week, and see how your life–and success–begins to change. (If you have employees, create a “culture of happiness” in your company…and watch employee turnover and absenteeism drop, and productivity soar!)
Habit #1: Appreciate life ~ Develop an attitude of gratitude and count your blessings! When you start looking for things to be thankful for, you’ll discover more reasons to be grateful.
Habit #2: Keep learning ~ Invest time and energy into continually learning and developing new skills. Keep your brain stimulated with exciting information and hobbies.
Habit #3: Do what you love ~ This may seem obvious, but a majority of people dislike their job! Choose a career that you enjoy and make time in your schedule for your hobbies and to pursue special interests.
Habit #4: Laughter – Don’t take life too seriously! Laugh at yourself, make light of your circumstances and infuse fun into daily activities.
Habit #5: Forgiveness – Holding onto anger, resentment or jealousy will only hurt you. Learn to forgive others & yourself for mistakes. Let it go and move on.
Habit #6: Meditation ~ More and more research is showing that meditation has major benefits on health and well-being. It increases positive emotions, life satisfaction and immune function.
Habit #7: Love ~ Nurture your relationships with friends & family and make it a priority to spend time with and to support your loved ones.
Habit #8: Stop comparing ~ Happy people don’t waste their time worrying about what other people think, or with gossiping. Let go of the need to judge or criticize. Instead concentrate on creating and living YOUR best life.
Habit #9: Be positive! ~ Make an effort to see the glass half full and always look for the silver lining in any situation. If you notice a negative thought creeping into your mind, counteract it with a powerful, positive affirmation.
Habit #10: Surround yourself with those who take you higher ~ Surround yourself with happy, positive people who truly want the best for you and support you on your journey to success.
The more you incorporate these 10 habits into your daily life, the happier (and wealthier, healthier, with better relationships) you’ll be.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.! Find out what it means to YOU…. as a leader in your life, your community, your family and in your business!
I loved this latest piece by John Maxwell, and had to share it with you! Here’s to your growth!
Below are seven action steps that can enable you to earn respect from those you lead.
- Respect yourself and those you work with (and live with! LH)
- Exceed the expectations of others
- Stand firm on your convictions and principles
- Possess maturity beyond your years
- Experience success in your family life and career
- Contribute to the success of others
- Think ahead of others
1) Respect yourself and those you work with
Self-respect comes with understanding who you are – your personality and purpose. You may not always win, but when you routinely give outstanding effort and you will experience success. Do not take failure or criticism personally. After failing, never give yourself permission to self-identify as a failure.
Respect is a building block of meaningful relationships, and it comes about when we place value on other people. As Ari Kiev writes, “Everyone wants to feel that he/ she counts for something and is important to someone. Invariably, people will give their love, respect, and attention to the person who fills that need.” In other words, believing the best in people brings out the best in people.
2) Exceed the Expectations of Others
Begin by setting high personal standards for yourself. Get rid of the “get by” mentality and push yourself to work with excellence and not just adequacy. After that, learn the expectations others have of you—both your teammates and customers. Finally, fulfill those expectations and go beyond them.
3) Stand Firm on Your Convictions and Principles
Strong convictions precede great actions. As a leader it’s always tempting to make palatable decisions that promise safety instead of bold ones that involve risk.
4) Possess a Maturity Well-Beyond Your Years
One mark of maturity is the willingness to assume responsibility. As Ed Cole said, “Maturity doesn’t come with age; it comes with acceptance of responsibility.” Another sign of maturity is consistency—routinely delivering results. A third indication of maturity is character, or the willingness to do what’s right even when it’s costly. A fourth and final mark of maturity is confidence. People more readily follow leaders who exude faith in their abilities.
5) Experience Success in Your Family and Career
Neither success nor failure is a one-time event. Rather, both result from the accumulation of thousands of seemingly insignificant actions done day-by-day and week-by-week. Identify which activities, performed daily, will develop you into the type of leader you aspire to be and then be relentless about practicing them.
6) Contribute to the Success of Others
However you define success, it has to involve helping people. In the words of Alan Loy McGinnis: “There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being—to help someone succeed.”
7) Think Ahead of Others
Leaders gain respect because they think ahead of others and more deeply than others. They project their minds into the future, and they discipline themselves to put sustained thought into major issues facing their team.
Onward and Upward!
You’ve heard that when it comes to solving problems or seeing possibilities, “two heads are better than one”, right? For the past 9 months I’ve been working with 3 business partners, “birthing” a new business–and I can attest to the fact that 4 heads are more than twice as good as two! So imagine having a permanent group of five or six people who meet every week or two for the purpose of problem solving, brainstorming, networking, and encouraging and motivating each other! Gangbusters!
This process is called masterminding and is one of the most effective success tools you can adopt! It is a powerful way to support your dreams and bring unlimited resources to your business and personal life.
Bestselling author Jack Canfield states, “Participating in a mastermind group has been critical to me. I can’t imagine achieving all I have without one, and it certainly made my goals happen much faster.” So if the “big fish” do master-minding, why shouldn’t you and I? For 3 years, I facilitated a mastermind group comprised of company presidents and CEO’s, and it was inspiring to witness how the members helped each other reach goals faster, and achieve more in their personal lives as well.
The premise of a mastermind group is that more can be accomplished–and more quickly–when people work together. Often called a “dream team”, mastermind groups are comprised of two or more individuals who commit to come together on a regular basis – usually biweekly, or monthly – to share ideas, information, thoughts, resources, feedback, and support.
3. Group meetings must be regarded as “sacred times” and life-affirming. Keep meetings enriching, encouraging and upbeat…creating a space to affirm the members. You might want to start with an inspiring story or quote–or a short time of meditation or prayer.
7. Each person then states what they will complete or do before the next meeting.

Turn a Have-to Into a Get-to!
Cultivating new, positive habits, or taking small steps, is like moving a rudder of a boat one degree. It’s not much in itself, but by doing so consistently and intentionally, you will over the course of a month or year, steer your “Success Ship”, to a totally different destination.
About fours years ago, I read something from author/speaker Tim Sanders that changed my life. Tim shared a simple philosophy : Turn your “have-to-do” activities into “get-to-do” activities. With the new year before us, it’s a good time to decide to cultivate powerful weekly habits which, over the course of this year, will gradually move your “Success Ship” to where you want.
Here’s more about this week’s Success Tip:
Re-framing your have-to’s is always powerful, but especially valuable on Mondays, when you feel like you have to do so many things – and you feel burned out or overwhelmed. Or, like me, you feel like you have to re-train or re-focus your “inner monkey” after relaxing over the weekend.
Here’s the idea: re-frame your tasks into opportunities. Author Seth Godin also advocates this mental approach to daily “chores”. Seth once quipped that he didn’t have to blog everyday, he gets to blog everyday. By reframing, you can find more ease, AND more joy in your day to day responsibilities…and you’ll be more productive; and, I’ll bet, more successful
Consider this–most of our activities are probably opportunities that we’ve lost gratitude for. We think of work as something we ‘have to’ go do (after all, it’s WORK, right??), but when we first got the job (or started the business) we thanked our lucky stars that we ‘got to’ have this career opportunity. Well, we still do!!
Look at your list. Is there a have-to be re-framed into a get-to? Tim Sanders recommends this approach: Pick out three big tasks you ‘have to’ do this week and pretend that you’ve been fired from them. Imagine you no longer get to manage your team at work. You no longer get to drive your son to baseball games and sit in the bleachers cheering for his team. You no longer get to attend creative meetings to hash out details on the new product. Think about it. Doesn’t that make you feel a little silly for complaining about these types of ‘duties’?
Today I get to blog, do an hour of phone work for my new company and then create a compelling “Meeting of the Minds” product for that new company. I get to do these things (YAAY!) and I’m grateful for these opportunities. With my new “gratitude attitude” I just may be more productive, more innovative and create a space for others to be the same when they’re with me. Try it yourself. Do this one habit for one week, and see the difference it makes. Onward and Upward!

Second: A much smaller percentage of the people develop their wishes into desires. These are estimated at 10%.
Third: A still smaller percentage of the people develop their wishes and desires into hopes. These are estimated at 8%.
Fourth: A still smaller percentage of the people step their mind-power up to where it becomes belief. These are estimated at 6%.
Fifth: And yet a very much smaller percentage of the people crystallize wishes, desires and hopes into belief, and then into burning desire, and finally faith. This percentage is estimated at 4%.
Sixth: And last, a very small percentage of the people take the last two steps, putting their faith into action by (1) planning and (2) acting to carry out their plans. This percentage is estimated at only 2%!
”The outstanding leaders in every walk of life are the ones in the sixth
group. They recognize the power of their own minds, take possession of that
power and direct it to whatever ends they choose. To these people the word
“impossible” has no meaning. To them, everything they want or need is possible–
they manage to get it. The only trait which differentiates them from most of
the others who accept failure as their lot, is that they recognize and use
their mind-power for the attainment of the circumstances and things they
want while the others do not.”
Doesn’t it feel GREAT when you focus your efforts and

The First 7–Questions to Ask. These are questions that you should ask and answer regularly as part of your personal strategic planning:Here are several additional questions that you should ask and answer regularly as part of your personal strategic planning:
- If you could wave a magic wand and have whatever you wished for in any part of your life, what would it be?
- If you could design your perfect lifestyle, day in and day out, what would it look like?
- If you could create your perfect calendar, how would you spend each day, each week, each month, and each year?
- How would you change your life if you received $1 million cash, tax free, today? What is the first thing you would do?
- What parts of your work do you enjoy the most and do the best? Where do you excel? What sorts of activities make you the happiest?
- What would you do, how would you spend your time, if you learned today that you had only six month to live?
- What one thing would you dare to dream if you knew you could not fail? If you were absolutely guaranteed success in any one goal, small or large, short term or long term, what would it be?
When you ask and answer these questions honestly, you dramatically increase your awareness of who you are and what you want. Invariably, you will find that there are things you are doing today that you should stop doing as soon as possible. In addition, you will realize that there are things you should be doing more of and new activities that you should be starting.
The Second 7–Areas of Your Life. This will enable you to clarify what you want in each area and what you have to do to get the things you want. The seven areas of life are the following:
- Business and career: How do you become extremely successful and satisfied and move to the top of your field?
- Family and personal life: How do you achieve balance between external success and your personal relationships?
- Money and investments: How do you get your financial life under control and achieve financial independence?
- Health and fitness: How do you achieve and maintain high levels of fitness, energy, and overall well-being?
- Personal growth and development: How do you identify and acquire the key knowledge and skills that you need to live an extraordinary life?
- Social and community activities: How do you structure your life to leave a real difference in the world and leave a lasting legacy?
- Spiritual development and inner peace: How to you organized your inner life and thinking so that you realize your full potential as a human being?
Give yourself a grade in each area, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. You will find that most of your stress and unhappiness comes in the area where you give yourself the lowest grade. Once you identify that area, you can determine the specific steps you need to take to get that area under control.
The Third 7–The Focal Points. There are seven steps that make up a system of personal strategic planning that enables you to determine where to put the X in each part of your life.
- Values: What are your values, virtues, qualities, and traits that are most important to you in each area of your life?
- Vision: If your life were perfect in this area five years from today, what would it look like?
- Goals: What specific goals must you achieve to fulfill your ideal future vision in that area?
- Knowledge and skills: In what areas will you have to excel in the future to achieve your goals and fulfill your vision?
- Habits: What specific habits of thought and action do you need to become the person who is capable of achieving the goals you have set for yourself?
- Daily activities: What specific activities do you have to engage in each day to ensure that you become the person you want to become and achieve those goals you want to achieve?
- Actions: What specific action or actions are you going to take immediately to begin realizing your ideal future vision?
Step by step you will develop absolute clarity about what you want in every part of your life. You will learn how to set clear priorities in each category. You will identify specific actions you can take immediately to bring about powerful and positive change in your life.
The quality of your thinking determines the quality of your life. The better questions you ask yourself, the better answers you will elicit. As you improve the quality of your thinking, the quality of everything you do improves at the same time. Because there is no limit to how much you can improve the quality of your thinking, there is no real limit to how much can improve your life.
